The Anime Flip Side - Science Fiction Anime

Description

Sol Bianca is a good anime with high quality artwork, and is unfortunately also one of the most overlooked. It is about a group of 5 female space pirates who spend their lives searching for treasure using their powerful and highly advanced spaceship, the Sol Bianca. The first movie starts off with the group hijacking a freighter and later discovering a stowaway named Rim in the cargo they captured. After Rim manages to convince the crew that there is a great treasure on the planet where he was going, they agree to take him there so they can get the treasure. Here they meet up and eventually fight with the powerful and none-to-friendly emporor of the planet, Batros. In the second video the Sol Bianca crew start off trying to obtain some pasha, the most valuable subtance known. During this they meet up with a criminal who wants the pasha for himself, have an encounter with the galactic police, and meet a mysterious stranger named Yuri who apparently knows Feb, though she denies this. As well, several questions about June's past are presented but are never answered as the ending clearly indicated that the story had intended to continue. Though it took several years, a continuation of the story was eventually made. The new videos actually take place before the original movies and explain some of the origins of the crew and the ship. The plot revolves largely around the crew trying to discover the truth of what happened to the Earth many years ago after they get caught up in an incident trying to steal a rare original Earth artifact. The voices and character designs have changed since the original, but the new Sol Bianca uses fully computer generated animation and there is much greater emphasis on the Spanish theme than the original. This adds an element of uniqueness to a story which was long awaited to continue.

Main Characters
April Bikirk

Original voice(s): Rei Sakuma / Rika Matsumoto

April is officially the captain of the Sol Bianca, though she often seems to share the leadership role with Feb. She apparently has known Feb for quite a long time as well. Deep down, April is kind-hearted and compassionate, though she hides this with a cold exterior, befitting of a pirate. She is determined and not one to forgive or forget easily, and will go out of her way for revenge against someone who has done something to her.

Feb Fall

Original voice(s): Yohko Matsuoka / Yoshiko Sakakibara

Feb appears to be more concerned with treasure than any of the other crew members and shares the leadership role somewhat with April. She is a calm and rational person, preferring to find a peaceful solution to things whenever possible, but certainly still knows how to handle herself in a combat situation. On the reverse side, Feb is also flirtatious and vain, and is an alcoholic.

Jani Mann

Original voice(s): Minami Takayama / Tomo Saeki

Strong and powerful, Jani is the fighter of the group. She is highly skilled in combat, particularly in the use of guns. Jani loves a good fight and won't back down from anyone. Unfortunately, Jani is also very impulsive and rarely thinks something through before jumping into a dangerous situation. She is very masculine in her appearance and attitude, but this is just a mask to hide her femininity. There is some evidence from a brief view of her diary that seems to indicate that she was not always like this, however. She and June do not get along very well and are constantly bickering with each other.

June Ashel

Original voice(s): Yuriko Fuchizaki / Eri Miyajima

June is the technical part of the Sol Bianca crew and the ship's navigator. She is extremely intelligent, but poor in combat and tries to avoid it whenever she can. June also has a very strong connection to Gi, the ship's artificially intelligent computer, and may even be apart of it in some way. She also has a holographic device that creates Sancho (who looks like a genie) that is linked to Gi and has the ability to interact with the physical world.

Mayo Jessica

Original voice(s): Miki Ito / Hiroko Konishi

The youngest member of the crew, and the last to join, Mayo's role is never clearly defined, although she is likey responsible for ship's maintanence and repairs. Originally she was a stowaway on the ship because "going to the stars was the only way to see her parents", but later joined as a crew member. A usually happy and somewhat immature person, Mayo is often more preoccupied with having fun than with getting her work done, but this may just reflect her young age. In combat, she pilots a small mech instead of just having a combat suit like the others.
